Tournament Information
The 25th annual Roger Maris Celebrity Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Sunday and Monday, June 21-23, 2008, at Edgewood Golf Course, Fargo, N.D. A sports auction, featuring hundreds of items from baseball and other sports, will be held Saturday evening, June 21, at the Fargo Holiday Inn. The tournament's banquet will be on Sunday evening, at the Great Hall of the Holiday Inn.
The tournament is an 18-hole, six-member team scramble with a shotgun start. Cost to participate is $250 to play on a celebrity's team and $200 on a team without a celebrity. One session will be held Sunday morning, June 22, while two rounds will be on Monday, June 23. A total of 26 teams will participate in each session. The tournament is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The event is a rain or shine tournament and no refunds will be given.
Past participants will be mailed pre-registration forms about April 1. For interested first-time golfers, please contact the tournament for necessary application forms. The tournament often sells out weeks before the event, so golfers are urged to return their completed pre-registration materials early.
Through its first 24 years, the tournament has raised over $1,200,000 for beneficiaries such as Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo's Shanley High School (Roger's alma mater) and the MeritCare-Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo.
Established in 1984 as a fund-raiser for Shanley High School, the initial event's celebrity list included Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Bill "Moose" Skowron, Ken Hunt and Bob Allison. Through the years, the tournament developed a reputation as one of the region's premiere events and has attracted dozens of stars from the sports and entertainment worlds, including members of the baseball, football, basketball and hockey Halls of Fame.
This year's Board chairman is Roger Fensted,. The board members include Wayne Blanchard, Jim Deutsch, Sandy Goughnour, Roger Gress, John Jensen, Orv Kelly, John Mark, Jerry Rostad, Richard Savageau and Larry Scott.
The tournament committee includes Mike Bergeson, Tami Blanchard Llewellyn, Kim Colwell, Mark DuBord, Denae Engelhardt, Peg Gilbertson, Ralph Llewellyn, Mary Lou Dahms, Lance Nitchke, Vicki Peterson, Tami Rostad, Tricia Rudnick, Mark Sander, Suzanne Sander, Denise Sargent, Darin Schiele, Bryan Schulz, Jodi Spaeth, Sue Thibedeau and Janelle Thompson.
